Trishuli River – 1 or 2 Days, The Most Popular Whitewater Rafting in Nepal
The Trisuli River is Nepal's most popular rafting river. It has impressive gorges and some moderate white water. A few exciting rapids are balanced by other easier sections. All is easily accessible from Kathmandu and Pokhara. This is popular also with kayakers as an easy access 'play river' and as a warm up for high water. Note however that the proximity of the main highway and the popularity of the river may detract from the experience.
The Trisuli River
Legend says that high in the Himalayas at Gosainkund the god Shive drove his trident into the ground to create three spring - the source of the river and hence its name Trisuli. Not far after this source the Trisuli joins the Bhote Koshi that flows from Tibet, the two rives joining in some pretty fearsome looking gorges that are visible on the way up to Langtang Trek. By Betrawati the gradient has eased and after this it becomes a more nature and powerful river which later adds many other major rivers to its flow - Buri Gandaki, the Marsyangdi and the Seti. When the Kali Gandaki joins it, shortly before the plains, it changes its name the Narayani. Here, it is a truly mighty river - peak flows in the Monsoon have been measured at 25700 cumecs (extreme, instantaneous discharge), about 900,000 cis or fifty times the typical flow of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon!
Normally the flow on the main rafting section of the Trisuli is about half that of the Grand Canyon and in many ways the rapids are smaller scale versions of those on the Colorado, they are formed mainly by boulder outwash from tributary streams and are characterized by big green shoots, holes either side and huge exploding waves down the bottom.
The Trisuli river has covered some truly impressive gorges in its lower part as it cut its way through the 2000 meter high Mahabharata Range. These gorges are also the route followed by the main highway from India to Kathmandu and the roar of diesel trucks undoubtedly detracts from a river trip - happily for much of the river the highway is some way from the river itself. The opposite side to the road is relatively wild and you should see some wildlife and profession of colorful birds.
Trisuli River Rafting
For many people this river represents the idea compromise rafting trip: just the right length of time, exhilarating rapids, but not too difficult, easily accessible from Kathmandu and at cheap price. certainly if you are looking for more of a 'wilderness' experience, unsullied beaches no other rafting groups and unspoiled scenery then you should consider on fate other rivers. The rapids on the Trisuli river are mainly big, bouncy and relatively safe: flips (where the raft capsizes) or other accidents are the rare in normal water conditions and if you wish, it is possible to walk around the few difficult rapids. The highway down the valley does mean that if you do have problems, you can leave the trip at almost any stage and be back in Kathmandu in a few hours - a consideration for a family group perhaps.
